Rick and Ken in last wicket partnership to win v Wandsworth 8/7/9

Wandsworth.
Lost the toss, the pink ball in use, on a murky Wandsworth Common with an undulating and damp wicket. Fielded first and after 4 wickets down from 5 overs, I was thinking a good toss to lose. The ball swung in the air and deviated off the wicket big time. However, the short boundaries still meant lots of runs and Wands recovered to 142/8 from their 20. Ken taking 3 early wickets and Rick and Wendel bowling well at the end.
Into bat and Knobby was run out early, Don hit a six off his first ball, but didnt last much longer. Then Wendel, 6's galore, including a massive one over the trees and over the wall into the flats beyond. At 94/4 off 10, it looked plain sailing. Then a shooter had Wendel lbw for 54, having hit seven 6's. The game still seemed ours though. Then the wickets started tumbling. Steve caught for 0, Swain caught for 20, Phil bowled for 8, Paul edged a wide for a golden, Joe two healthy 4's before being stumped, then Chris with a ridiculous run out without facing a ball. Suddenly we were 117 for 9 with 5 overs remaining and it seemed that we had blown it. Last men Rick and Ken had the overs (but did they have the balls?) and the tension was high. Wandsworth were moving in for the kill. 24 needed from 24 balls seemed a long way off. 18 off 3, 15 off 2, 9 off 1, Rick dropped, and then 2 fours from Ken and victory was ours with 1 ball remaining. Leisure were chuffed, Wands were gutted. Well done Rick and Ken for keeping in there.

Some old match reports from the Rowly Archive

ECT, Trailfinders, 22/6/05.
Not quite the longest day of the year but it probably felt like it for ECT, on a day in which HLCC dominated, and records were smashed.

Put into bat by ECT, HLCC reached exactly 200 (for 2), Wendel ending up on 127no from 58 balls (16*4, 4*6), quietly supported by Chris (40 from 35 balls). We bowled and fielded well, ECT finishing on 115/5. Sunil, Don, Phil and Rick with the wickets.

On the day after England scored their highest ever one day score, we hit our highest ever 20 over score. I've never seen one of our guys score a hundred either, so well done Wendel. We've been on the receiving end a few times (including next weeks opponents), so to be dishing it out felt quite acceptable.
------------

Thanks to a fine bowling and catching performance on an interesting wicket (any other descriptions welcome), we did really well to restrict the big hitters of Wandsworth to 121/9 off their 20 overs. Didn't quite bowl them all out, as the last 2 held out for the last 4 overs, despite one of them being hit on the head by a Wendel bouncer (3 days before his wedding!).

The loss of each wicket had its own story but somehow we managed to blow it big time as we crumbled to 30/6 from 8 overs, ending up on 80/7 from our 20. Rick top scored again with 18, and also took 3 wickets.

Oh well, there's always next year!

Spelthorne 13/7. ECT won the toss and elected to bat. After a frantic 70 off 7, we pegged them back to just 108 off 20, all the bowlers performing well, apart from poor old Sunil who had obviously upset their Mr Big the previous game. I believe we bowled 4 maidens, including 3 on the run, which is incredible in a 20 over game. Don got the danger man with, perhaps, the catch of the season at deep mid on. The total never looked a problem as we strolled home with 4 overs to spare, Adam scoring 50no, and well supported by Jim.

26th JULY v OLD CALIFORNIANS CC, RUXLEY LANE, EWELL

An enjoyable game, but a disappointing defeat. We bowled well, but gave OCCC ( I prefer their spell check name!) just a few too many runs in the field, allowing them to get to 132/7. Perhaps the best bowling figures I've seen in my 10 years was by CHRIS BICK as he took 5 wickets in 18 balls, all BOWLED. He did go for 12 runs though, but well done Chris. Well deserved. We were up there after 10 overs but the regular loss of wickets meant we ended up well short on 105 all out, Phil top scoring with 20. Thanks to Eddie and Craig for helping us out with short notice. Well played. Last year OCCC also got 132 (for 3), we finished on 83/9, so we are improving!

A famous HLCC victory, to break 3B's winning run of 30 games (apparently). Think we could well have been the last team to have beaten them, the year before last.

3B's: 149/5 (paul 3/21) 20ov
HLCC: 151/6 (phil40, extras37,wendel28)19.3ov

Wasn't looking good at 60 odd off 6 overs, but with tight bowling and regular wickets we pinned them back to just 149 from their 20. More or less up with the run rate through out our innings, Phils excellent knock and a few big hits from Wendel, plus one or two wayward overs from 3Bs, set us up nicely for a tight finish. Chris hitting the winning runs with 3 balls remaining, at 9.15pm. Oh, and there was a bit of a fight (perhaps Wendel/ Rick would like to elaborate?). Special mention to Rick, Sunil and Steve for their umpiring. And great to see Mike present, looking well.

To their place on July 26th!

(We have now played 3B's 7 times, won 3, lost 4, so its fair to say that we could be their bogey team!)

HLCC 140/4, HAM 114/2
Two major changes this time round. Won the toss, and batted first. 2 quick wickets started me wondering if it was the best decision. However, Chris and Adam bedded in with a solid 77 run partnership, Chris scoring 26 and Adam finishing on 64no (now averaging 165 this year, thanks to quite a few not outs). Paul chipping in with a late 23. HL finishing on 140 from the 20. Hammersmith were always behind with the required 7 an over, never up'd the tempo and finished on 114/2, Sunil and Steve with the wickets, but well backed up by Don, Rick and Chris, for another comprehensive HLCC win.

Wendel hits 14 6's in a score of 140no, off about 45 balls, to chase down ECT's 198/3 (from 20overs) in just 12.2 overs.

Despite a good shout for LBW first ball, Wendel made light work of ECTs mammoth score.

Swansea 1968 almost became Spelthorne 2006. Wendel hitting the fifth ball of bowler Smiths (only) over for a 4 (albeit just a foot short of the boundary), to finish with 34 runs from it. (I think you can work it out..)

Everyone else had a fairly quiet game.

ECT 198/3 (Wendel 1/19, RIck 1/30)
HLCC 204/2 (12.2 ov) (Wendel 140no, Steve 24)

--------------
First game of the season, glorious sunshine, cloudless sky over Spelthorne. ECT batted first. Steve the Pieman in good form, knocking up several sixes in his 66no from a total of 122/4 from 15 overs, including a massive one over pavilion. However, he was dropped twice. Paul 2 wickets, Adam and Martin one each.

Slowish start to our response but Adam (39) and Wendel (26) getting us to a stage where we needed 35 from 4. Paul, Jim and Don getting us to 2 needed off the last ball to win, Phil scraping a single to tie!

Despite the new £40K fence, the designer decided to make the gaps big enough for a cricket ball to slip through. Indeed one did, almost taking a motorcyclist out. Not good.

A very exciting game to start with and a tie a fair result as it could have gone either way.

30/5 - Roxborough Park, Harrow.
Harrow 114/10 20ov (chris3/10, martin2/15, rick3/17, mike2stmp,1ctch)
Leisure 111/6 20ov (knobby36, don33, wendel1)

Should have won this one, falling an agonising 3 runs short, but we did well to even play a full game considering the consistent rain all day until 4pm. A newish look Harrow from 55/6 from 10 posting a good score of 114 from 20, some familiar young lad getting
a cool 49. Early wickets from Bull and Bick, yet 114 was very gettable. A
good start, but we never quite got above the run rate and the pressure built as we lost late wickets. 46/1 from 10ov became 12 needed off the last. Wendel run out for a 1 ball 1, going in with 20 off 3ov needed.

27/28 - Monmouth/ Cheltenham tour
Lots of rain, no beer, and no cricket. Complete wash out. Didnt even bother traveling.

Wed20/6 Spelthorne v ECT

Gaffin has scored 355 against us in 5 games at Spelthorne. Out 3 times
(catches from don, jim, paul). 1 ton, 4 fifties!!! ill have what hes eating.

------
V Old Californians. Leisure dish out a thumping to the Old Cals. OCCC reduced to just 106 from their 20 overs, tight bowling from Martin, Wendel, Chris and Paul on a variable pitch. Wendel smashing 75no to win in the 14th over. A fine performance.

--------
V Hammersmith. Needing 22 from the last over, Leisure bowl out Hammersmith for the 2nd time this season. Wendel with the runs and Paul with the wickets. An exciting game as it seemed it was always going to be a lot closer than it finished up as. Hammersmith are keen for a seasons decider. It may happen. Watch this space.

V Thames Trains. Couldn’t even catch a train. 10 drops being the story of this game. TT’s 146 (or 137 according to the book) much more than they should have had, but actually less than it could have been (despite the drops, we did field quite well!), being just out of reach with HL needing 15 (or 6?) off the last over. Wendel out first ball, Murray run out without even facing one. 3 wickets for Martin.

V Elmbridge. First game in 3 weeks. Not a great score, Adams 29 very valuable, but proved enough against, probably, the weakest team we play, more so now that they have lost their captain and best player. A golden for Steve, off the pads onto the stumps. The dismissal of their opening bat after a few power shots, the only one who looked like he could win the game, ensuring the game was in the bag, 3 wickets each for Don and Wasim and Elmbridge bowled out in the last over.

------
Spelthorne 13/7.
